Strike Up The Band

While you were sleeping one day last week, autumn crept into the calendar of your life.

College football is in the air. The fast-stepping marching band of Notre Dame University sounds a good note for us today.

Though the photo is silent, we can all call up the memories of bands recorded deeply in our memory. Enjoy the music!

Change is a Sign of Life

September days are soon to give way to October.

Though the beach has a timeless quality, cooling summer breezes will gradually change into crisper drafts whipping across the sandy surface.

The sand fences will morph into snow fences without moving an inch.
Sometimes we change too, without moving an inch.

Seasons come and go. In our lives as well as by the shore.

Enjoy the changes.

The Exalted Cross Begets Possibility

The Possibility

If Jesus wept, and
some say, weeps today,
then did his tears
spill down like
shattered glass?

If shattered glass is all I see
around me and within,
is there no more than this?
No shard of music?
Taste of color?
Dream?

And yet, if he still weeps
with us, there might be light.
If he still weeps with us,
there must be Light.

Of Birth and Death

September 8 is kept in the Catholic Church as the commemoration of the Birthday of Mary. Though we do not know the actual birth date of practically anyone in biblical times, we pause today to recall the significance of her life in the story of our salvation in Christ.

September 8, 2001 was the day on which I sat with my mother in a hospital room as she peacefully passed away at 10 AM. I pause today to recall the significance of her life for so many people who knew her. But most of all, this day brings a flood of memories of her, my father and the decades we shared – a closeness in spirit and love.

Be grateful for life!

Labor Day Picnic

Labor Day in the USA is the official end of traditional summer vacation which began on Memorial Day holiday, May 31. Actually schools have opened in many places already. Time for just one more quick picnic at the beach!

It may seem that some creatures have all the luck! The sand, sea and sky are their home year ’round. But that can be a little challenging when the waves turn icy cold and occasional snow squalls turn the brown sand to bright white.

We all have our “place” in God’s creation. Happiness comes from recognizing the possibilities we have within our own place, rather than always comparing our situation to what we don’t have. The birds never really get a holiday from their morning routine! No one is bringing them breakfast in bed, or pushing the snooze button for some extra winks. Happy Labor Day!
